U.S. Equity Preview Tue, 25 Aug 1998

New York, Aug. 25 (Bloomberg) -- The following is a list of
companies whose shares may move in U.S. markets tomorrow. The
stock symbol is in parentheses after the company name. Today's
closing prices are included.

Applied Materials Inc. (AMAT): The world's largest maker of
semiconductor-manufacturing equipment said it will cut 2,000
jobs, or 15 percent of its workforce, to reduce costs in the face
of slumping sales of its equipment to computer-chip makers in
Asia and elsewhere. The company said it will take an unspecified
charge for the firings, which will result in a fourth-quarter
loss. Applied Materials rose 3/4 to 31 7/16.

Exxon Corp. (XON): The oil company will idle a crude
processing unit at its Baton Rouge, Louisiana, refinery in early
October for planned maintenance, traders said. Exxon declined
comment on plans for work a the 450,000-barrel-a-day refinery,
the company's largest and the ninth-biggest in the world. Exxon
fell 3/16 to 70 3/8.
