D.C. Metro Rail System Will Be Using Smart Cards By Sept.

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's five rail lines all will be ready to accept contactless stored-value fare cards in September, says Peter Benjamin, the system's chief financial officer. Benjamin says employees currently are using the cards; early this fall, about 1,000 consumer volunteers will join in. Assuming all goes well, WMATA plans to convert the entire system to contactless cards in January, he says. WMATA carries more than 500,000 passengers daily. The system developer is Cubic Corp., San Diego.
