Subject: Farm Computer Use
Got this report sitting on my desk about farm computer use, so I thought I would bring some stats to the debate.
Data are from a USDA survey of approximately 34,000 farms conducted in June 1997. It doesn't mention what is covered, but I assume it covers computers as such but not embedded systems. Data should be considered current as of June 1997.
US average: 38% of farms have computer access, 31% lease or own computers, 20% (1/5) use computers for farm business, and 13% have Internet access.
State info: farms using computers for farm business range from 7% in Tennessee to 41% in Washington State.
Regional info: farms using computers for farm business-- Northeast, 18%; North Central, 22%; South, 15%; West, 31%.
By farm size: farms using computers for farm business-- annual sales of $1,000-9,999, 11%; sales of $10,000-99,000, 20%; sales of $100,000 and over, 47%.
By type of farm: farms using computers for farm business-- crop farms, 24%; livestock farms, 17%.
The largest percentage of farms using computers for farm business is for farms in the West with annual sales of $100,000 and over: 62%.
(The West, btw, covers AZ, CA, CO, ID, MT, NV, MN, OR, UT, WA, and WY) Source: "Farm Computer Usage and Ownership" released July 30, 1997 by National Agricultural Statistics Service. It's a little 4-page deal. For more info, you can call 1-800-727-9540 between 7:30 and 4:00 pm ET.
