Warnock & Co. may have been sitting on their hands a little too long, it true. But that doesn't mean the bottom's about to fall out. Adobe doesn't need a white knight, it needs new products. A CNET story today painted a pretty clear picture. The graphics market is saturated with Adobe products -- everyone has Adobe software -- so the only way these clowns can make a buck is on upgrades ... which they seem to be pulling a Microsoft with. You know, send out what should be a bug release and shrink wrap it as an upgrade with a couple new features (which incidently pisses me off ... no sooner had I gotten comfortable with PS4, and they send out PS5. Shit. Today on their web site I see that Illustrator 8 is in beta. Dammit.) Anyway, as I see it, they can only grow with new products. How much can you consistently make with a upgrade prices when your full-version products retail for so much more? That means they either make a set of new products themselves, or they buy somebody. For my money -- and it is my money -- they should throw some sheckles Macromedia's [MACR] way. They've got an increasingly decent line of web-based products that would fall in line nicely with what Adobe already does. Warnock quit the Netscape board to "address these problems." I've been long on Adobe for two years now. Haven't been disappointed until recently. What they do in the next month will decide whether I pick up my ball and go home. Mr Warnock: Get off your ass.
