Apple has another chance.

It's new operating system("OS"), System 8 (codename Copeland) is way past due and timeing is the key issue for Apple now. Microsoft beat it on timing it's windows 95 release by two years (and counting)

Right now Apple is looking outside of itself to get a new operating system. It's looking at SUN micorsystems Solaris OS which is now mostly for unix machines. But, this is not the interesting thing.

The more interisting partner is BE Inc. This company was actually started by a former Apple employee, and the Be OS is designed from the ground up for use with multiple processors. The use of multiple processors would give a great cost advantage to Apple. Essentially, it could use multiple, cheaper microprocessors and get the same result of using the new faster microprocessors.

Right now Apple and Be are in the middle of negotations and Apple will either merge with BE or somehow acquire it's OS (it's in the WSJ for Dec. 16., sect. B).

This is going to be an interesting battle. Apple has never been in the sorry situation that it finds itself in now. Only a bold move can change its fate. This may be the bold move.

One thing is for sure. BE is going to go up...
