Ascend Continues Number One Position in
Frame Relay and ATM Wide Area Network
Market

Three Industry Reports Reaffirm Ascend's Position as the Leading

ATM and Frame Relay WAN Switch Vendor

Ascend Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ:ASND - news), a leader in wide area networking (WAN) solutions for
providers and users of the Public Network, today announced research results from Cahners In-Stat Group and
International Data Corp. (IDC) that reiterate Ascend's continued number one market share position for
carrier-class Frame Relay and ATM WAN switching products.

According to a Cahners In-Stat Group market share report to be published at the end of August, Ascend is the
new leader in worldwide ATM WAN equipment revenue sold to service providers with 25.6 percent market
share. Additionally, Ascend was the worldwide market share leader in ATM WAN equipment and Frame Relay
switch revenue sold to service providers (28.3 percent), total Frame Relay switch revenue (23.7 percent) and
Frame Relay switch revenue sold to service providers (37.8 percent) for the first half of 1998.

''Our research indicates that Ascend remains the clear leader in supplying service providers with carrier-class
ATM and Frame Relay WAN solutions,'' said Jeremy Duke, director of the Networking Group at Cahners
In-Stat Group. ''Ascend continues to dominate the Frame Relay market, and has now claimed the top position
in ATM WAN equipment, reaffirming that it's the company to beat in the WAN marketplace.''

IDC supplied further evidence of Ascend's market leadership. According to IDC's recent report, ''Public Data
Networks: Market Share Update and Analysis,'' Ascend claimed top billing with 21.8 percent market share in
worldwide WAN switch sales in 1997 in the public data network. Another IDC report, ''ATM and Frame Relay
Switching Market Review and Forecast, 1997-2002,'' placed Ascend as the top vendor in overall worldwide
Frame Relay switch revenues in 1997 with 27.1 percent market share.

''Based on strong sales of its Frame Relay and ATM switches to service providers, Ascend is the WAN switch
leader,'' said Lee Doyle, vice president, Local Area Networks and Data Communications for IDC. ''Service
providers are expanding their data networks to include IP, Frame Relay, and ATM to supply the bandwidth
needed for corporate intranet communications and the vast Internet market. Ascend clearly has the only true
multiservice switches to supply this market.''

''Our continued leadership in the WAN market is a result of our focus on providing the best WAN switching
solutions to service providers around the world,'' said Hassan Ahmed, executive vice president and general
manager, Core Systems Division of Ascend. ''These figures from IDC and In-Stat verify our commitment to
excellence in developing market-leading WAN solutions.''
