<on what accomplishments> I'm not sure I would use accomplishments as criteria to define a statesmen.Perhaps Putting Principal ahead of politics would be more important than accomplishments. After all a very astute politician could accomplish much and simply depending on ones own political leaning these accomplishments could be viewed differently. Now this is were we may not quite see eye to eye.I think those of us that opposed that war might see his actions this way.He knowingly threw away a very successful career as a US Senator to appose the war.Challanging an incumbent president of ones own party was political suicide [ at the time].Weather you supported that war or not you must agree that he was acting out of principal .The opposite would be Kennedys' challenge after he saw that opposition to the war could be a stepping stone to the Presidency. Now if you were a supporter of that war clearly you would see things differently.I would be interested to here your views on this as I gather from the tone of your post are they are quite different from mine.
