There is also the possibility that Ericson/Motorola and others have patents to other essential technology (such as a flip phone) and when the going gets tought, they will throw them in their opponents face. This often ends up in a cross license where the strong get stronger etc. (see Microsoft and Apple).

True, Is95 is an important standard but it is just not the only one that a group of people could conjure up.
