I saw first hand what the oil market is like once you leave the US.
In Australia we paid $0.65AU/liter (about $2.41AU/gal) for gas and
in NZ it was $0.85NZ/liter (about $3.15NZ/gal). A person wouldn't
want to do a lot of driving at those prices, but if you go over
there with US dollars it doesn't seem too bad. At today's exchange
rate, that equates to about $1.36US/gal to drive in Australia and
$1.55US/gal to drive in NZ. This is at least in the ballpark of
What I'd expect to pay around here in the SF Bay Area where unleaded
fuel was $1.34US/gal last nite. Btw, I was told that the price of gas
in NZ had just dropped $0.10NZ/liter because a new oil company had
just entered the picture there. I was surprised to hear that NZ had
refineries (on No. Island near Whangarei).

It's interesting what a great comparison oil is for evaluating world
currencies.
