Oh, right, Keith, you understand things so well. I went off searching for Newt's "We need more campaign money, not less" quote, but the best I could come up with was this.
GOP Hypocrite of the Week-Newt Gingrich
Gingrich Now: "I am very disappointed in Attorney General Reno's failure to appoint an independent counsel. She looks like a fool I mean let's be honest. This is a nice lady. I've given her the benefit of 700 doubts." (Associated Press, 10-11-97)
Gingrich Then: In 1986, Congressman Gingrich suggested that President Reagan make phone calls to Congressional fund-raisers from the White House. "At the request of Congressman Newt Gingrich and the NRCC...it was agreed to try, as 'an experiment,' a Presidential phone call to fund-raisers for selected congressmen and challengers in their districts," then-Reagan political director Mitchell E. Daniels Jr. wrote in a September 12, 1986 memo. (Associated Press, 9-3-97)
Newt and the Bills are pretty hard to distinguish among, honesty is not something any of them seem big on. Everybody seems to have forgotten for the moment Newt's own little ethical travails, his $4meg book deal with Rupert Murdoch, that $300k fine that his wife was going to pay, then Bob Dole lent him the money. Plus, the way he served divorce papers on his first wife, and the creative uses he was said to have made of his congressional desk. Now that he's a friend of your Bill, though, "what you understand" what he wants to focus on means something. Glad to hear it.
Cheers, Dan. |
