Well that's certainly good news about Allen and Gates investing. They need to clean house with the stiffs who have run these companies in the past. Eventually (i.e. probably within 5 years) everything will be available over the internet including all of free TV, cable, radio, phone, fax, picturephone, have I left something out? Whoever controls that controls the future, and the internet will dominate the media for the next 50 years as TV has dominated the last 50 years. I have seen Web TV and it's pretty cool. What is Web TV Plus?
There will have to be a battle to the finish between cable and phone lines for accessing the internet. I think 1 meg/sec is the minimum rate needed by y2k. I know msft is involved in the phone lines as well, so I think Gates is trying to cover his bets. Which do you think will win. Of course, there will still be people who just want telephone lines and cable TV but they will be a smaller and smaller percentage as time goes by. Also, I know one of the problems of some cable internet systems is you still need a phone line to transmit. Is that the case with harmonic's equipment? I think that's a definite drawback.
