I believe the theoretical sensitivity of the technology is more than adequate. It is just a challenge to create that performance in reality. The upper limits of detection or hook effect where the signal no longer increases proportionately with the sample concentration depends a lot on the number of functional antibodies bound to the active surface of the grating.

I don't know what methods they are using these days so I can't really answer the question. If they could only get the funding they need to really push the system to its limits, I believe it would be quite impressive. Perkin Elmer certainly could fund this if they desired.
