Nancy,

Jobs three friends Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar had an original intention to comfort Job but were so stunned that for 1 week they said nothing. This 1 week was a testing time for their souls, they could either seek the counsel of God in this matter or lean to their own understandings. I'm under the impression that they tried some prayer first but God did not respond, so they started relying upon their own understandings which was probably based upon tradition more than anything else. They had come to the conclusion that Job was suffering only because he was a sinner. Even the Lord's disciples held that view before they were converted. When they saw a blind man they asked "who did sin the man or his parents", Jesus replied that it wasn't because of sin that he was blind but it was for the glory of God. I'm sure the disciples were thinking along the same lines as Jobs friends, if he wasn't such a sinner then these things never would have happened.

I'm amazed that you can believe that God's wrath could be kindled against Jobs counselors but not against yourself for trying to prevent the gospel from going forth.

Chris
