Dave, the DVD decoder is an interesting addition to the ATI procuct line. The GI settop box uses ATI chips for the graphics function, but it uses a Broadcom solution for MPEG-2. Why doesn't GI use ATI for both MPEG-2 and graphics, since they can put both functions on one chip?

I may be going out on a limb, but if ATI licensed the MPEG-2 decoder design from "someone," then the license may be for use only in PCs and not settops.

Again, I wonder if ATI designed the MPEG-2 decoder from scratch (unlikely)? If ATI bought the design and layout, who did they buy it from? Note that the DVD decoder does not include AC-3. Possibly the AC-3 is done in software.
