Digi shareholders approve deal, now waiting approval from regulators

IDO of Japan to Deploy DSC's Infusion(TM) Home Location Register Systems

DALLAS, Aug. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- DSC Communications Corporation (Nasdaq: DIGI) announced today the signing of a multi-million-dollar agreement with IDO Corporation, calling for deliveries of DSC's INfusion(TM) Home Location Register (HLR) application. IDO, a leading cellular service provider in Japan, is currently deploying a Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) network in cooperation with DDI, another leading network operator in Japan. Together, the two carriers will provide nation-wide cdmaOne coverage with their networks, which includes DDI's newly unveiled CDMA network. Both companies have selected to deploy DSC's IS-41 HLR application, which serves as an external database for their cdmaOne services.

DSC has already begun deliveries of its INfusion HLR to IDO, and installation is currently underway. IDO expects to begin service on its new cdmaOne network in early 1999. Terms of the agreement with DSC were not disclosed.

Toshio Itabashi, director and general manager, Engineering Department of IDO Corporation, said: "IDO selected DSC to supply its HLR equipment because the INfusion HLR product matched all of IDO's requirements: rapid subscriber provisioning, high transaction capability, subscriber capacity and rapid database synchronization time."

Itabashi also noted that the DSC HLR is compatible with similar equipment provided to DDI Corporation, IDO's business partner in cdmaOne services. This permits the two companies to offer nationwide roaming services to their customers.

"CDMA technology offers a broad range of benefits to today's wireless marketplace," said Paul Peck, vice president, DSC - Japan. "IDO will be able to use its new CDMA network to provide increased calling capacity and improved service quality, all while making more efficient use of its wireless spectrum.

"In turn, DSC's INfusion HLR will support the advanced information requirements of this network. IDO will be able to track specific customer profiles when determining, for example, what call features are assigned to a certain subscriber or what registration information to use. Also, because IDO and DDI are both deploying DSC's HLR, their customers' service features will function consistently across both carriers' coverage areas," added Peck.
