Kremlin calls Yeltsin resignation reports "lies"

Thursday August 27, 2:39 pm Eastern Time

MOSCOW, Aug 27 (Reuters) - The Kremlin press service on
Thursday fiercely denied reports of Russian President Boris
Yeltsin's resignation and lambasted foreign media for
''spreading untrue information.''

''Any information from 'informed sources' about the alleged forthcoming resignation of the
Russian president is inventions and lies,'' the statement said.

''Russian President Boris Yeltsin is carrying out all the range of powers given to him by the
constitution and is now preparing for a number of important international meetings, the first of
which, with Bulgarian President Petar Stoyanov, will take place tomorrow,'' the statement said.

The statement was issued after U.S. television company CBS reported that Yeltsin had signed a
letter of resignation.

''The presidential press service is addressing CBS and other foreign media with a strong request
not to spread untrue information and not to hamper preparations for an official visit to Russia by
the president of the United States Bill Clinton,'' the statement added.

It was the second day in a row that financial markets worldwide were gripped by talk the
Kremlin leader had stepped down amid an acute financial and political crisis. The Kremlin said
earlier Yeltsin was at his country residence outside Moscow and had spoken to acting Prime
Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin by telephone.
