The question has been raised whether Qualcomm can compete effectively with other manufacturers. Qualcomm currently has a manufacturing capacity of 200,000 phones per month through its joint enterprise with Sony called Qualcomm Personal Electronics. Qualcomm also will early in the first quarter of 1997 have the capacity to manufacture on its own over 400 base stations per month. Sprint PCS will use about 5,000 base stations to equip its 65 markets so it is apparent it will not be a lack of capacity that will prevent Qualcomm from becoming a major CDMA infrastructure and phone supplier.
