A positive review of merger from Bears Stearns, as picked up off of the Yahoo thread:
Aug 27 1998 9:03AM EDTKenneth C. Starkey Managing Director, Bear, Stearns, & Co. Inc. "Culturally I think they're a really good fit. The way that Bay is going to be integrated into the Nortel family, I think sends a strong message to all the Bay employees that they're going to play a real prominent role in the new structured company and unlike in the past, where Bay had experienced some cultural differences, in previous mergers, that's not at play now, and I think they're going to be a real dynamic force to be reckoned with in the enterprise space." "After the merger, I think what we expect to see is a competitive landscape consisting of Nortel-Bay, Cisco, and Lucent. And I think that Nortel-Bay are differentiated in that Cisco doesn't have a major presence on the carrier and ISP side of the business. Lucent has that, but doesn't have the enterprise customer, because Lucent -- I think that the new combined company has a perfect blend to play a significant role in both sides of those business. There are high hopes that Nortel and Bay are really going to be able to choose something special." "I think the opportunity is there. I think they have the right people. they have the right technology. They have the right leadership. Both David House and his organization, and John Roth and his organization are, in my estimation, world class players. And it would not surprise me one bit if'we woke up a few years from now and everyone was chasing Nortel-Bay." "Obviously, we're feeling very intelligent here at Beer Stearns today, because we pride ourselves on picking the best technology players for the right solutions, and, once again, we picked a couple of winners, which now are going to be merging together. So we're very proud of that, and I think that it's going to be very exciting to see how other customers start to get the message that we got a long time ago, which is that there's a big market out there, there are other choices other than Cisco, and that these two companies really do some outstanding things within their own spaces and blend it together. I can't imagine a better enterprise model for the sales force to go out and leverage off of." ÿ Maybe this will pan out after the nearterm debacle?
