Dale, Stocky, re:"Grove said it himself that he had caved"

But do we know why?

Could somebody describe what this is all about or provide a link to some article with real information in it? Is this all about the NSP thing?

If it is that subject, then I suggest that the reactions described are correct, but not because of some sort of power-intimidation play but simply because of technical facts.

The way I remember the NSP thing is that MS was not talking about their program at a time that Intel was hot to have real time soft signal processing functions. With NSP Intel "invented" real time hooks attached to Windows 3.1 to force the issue. I think Gates was "livid" because the hooks "hooked" into stuff that were being changed for Win95. Bill was "livid" in that if the Intel stuff went forward it would hamper future plans for a newer cleaner multimedia Windows kernel architecture.

So Bill was forced to "share" with Intel, then Andy "caved" because Intel has no interest in crippling Windows. Intel's goal was to accelerate real time multimedia and this they accomplished. The way I see it that these companies often "cooperate" because they have to out of self defense. All this is interesting but far, far from sinister or illegal. All this looks to me like another attempt by DOJ to make some "federal" case out of normal business behavior.
