It could be an old wives tale for all I know, but my understanding is the following:

"trivia" or "trivium" means "three roads" in Latin. Back in the days of old Rome, whenever three roads met at an intersection there would be a board posted that contained notes of information. These notes became known as trivia.

Sounds like a good story anyway!
