Yes, it is a wordy, run-on sentence, but it's somehow more expressive, I think. It's conversation. And your more efficient version leaves out part of the meaning, I think-- the "I think I know why" part that reveals a certain uncertainty on my part. Or should I say "feigns" it, for politesse!
