Looks like for now international politicoeconomic turmoil has swallowed all traces of l'affaire Head of State.
I would venture to expand on your observation re our political system.
*All* political systems are by nature corrupt. Forms of state which distribute power are inefficient and prone to subversion by well-concealed master bureaucrats. Those states which concentrate power usually corrupt those who hold the reins. The proverbial "good king" can easily turn bad or be succeeded by a real nutcase.
As always, we are faced with the distasteful prospect of choosing the least bad form of state. The American Revolutionaries laid out a pretty robust blueprint - but it depended for its propagation on an informed constituency. Today's voters are woefully ill-informed - even the smart ones. (Our main source of information is the media coverage of candidates badmouthing each other. And when one of them is cornered ratlike into actually SAYING something, chances of selective amnesia are high.) Ill-informed and fickle. Since we are given choices which are neither clear or likely, often we grab for the really spectacular unlikelies. I mean, it's all makebelieve, right? So why not shout ourselves blue in the face about oral sex and partial-birth abortions? Nobody's gonna do a **** thing about the national debt anyway, whether they say so or not.
Hmmm. Need more coffeee... back later.
