Agreed. Their 3d ability has strong competition and it could be the achilles heel.

However, they are cheap enough, and fast enough for the mainstream. And at $30-$40 are a no brainer to the OEM's. I like their story. I think they did the right thing. They had a good offering and just made it better.

Their accelerated software is from Quadrant, as the all knowing Chromac indicated, and is said to out perform mediamatics and Zoran's.

In addition to the Motion Comp they used to have, it looks like they added the iDCT and Subpicture decoding.

The iDCT should free up more CPU cycles. The Subpicture decoding can be done reasonably well in software, but the interpolating scaler and alpha compositor they added for it is a plus.

THE IDEAL MULTIMEDIA PLATFORM

RAGE 128 uses integrated DVD/MPEG-2 decoding, including iDCT and motion compensation for top quality DVD with lowest CPU usage. The hardware subpicture decoder with interpolating scaler and alpha compositor provide optimal DVD subpicture quality. RAGE 128 includes an enhanced, 16-bit video port with support for both ATI Multimedia Channel (AMC) and VIP 1.1, along with support for all common HDTV formats. The RAGE 128 can be directly connected to popular video upgrades like TV output, video capture and HDTV decoder chips.

BTW: remember Quadrant moved into a larger building recently? Well I hear they paid Canadian for it...
