It is part of the scarce silicon area paradigm. In the single chip systems increasingly dominant in communications systems, there is no room for Pentium or Power PC instruction sets. MIPS has a more efficient RISC architecture. It means that Broadcom can compete across the board for slots in settop boxes, cellular phones, PDAs, and other applicances that will have Internet connections.
