Is This The Bottom? By many indications we are at or near a bottom. Analysts are saying that all of the bad news from Russia has been priced into the market, although Japan could still do some damage. Institutional investors, who have kept much of the new money that flowed into their funds this month in cash, have been saying that they were waiting for the panic selling that always seems to accompany a bottom before they jumped back in, which has happened the last two days. In addition, the Dow Transportation Average(sm), which is considered a leading indicator, spent most of the day in the green, closing down 3 to 2827, containing its losses much better than the other major indexes. Keep in mind that while the DJTA(sm) is a leading indicator, it is not an accurate tool for timing the market. Finally, the most recent declines in 1990 and 1994 began to turnaround in September, leading to strong rallies between October and December. |
