Home Depot: Reports 2Q98 EPS of $0.31
Author: William A. Julian 1(212)526-2482
Rating: 2
Ticker : HD Rank(Old): 2-Outperform Rank(New): 2-Outperform
Price : $44 52wk Range: $49-23 Price Target (Old): $55
Today's Date : 08/18/98 Price Target (New): $55

* Home Depot reported 2Q98 EPS of $0.31, equal to our estimate and 1 cent ahead of consensus. Home Depot bested estimates with better than expected gross margin improvement and reductions in SG&A as a percent of sales.

* Comp sales results of 7%, LINCS were -6%. Comps were in line with
expectations, but LINCS were slightly below, against a difficult comparison from a year ago.

* We continue to rate the shares 2-outperform. We believe the stock could begin to perform better as the outlook for the sector remains strong.

3Q98 OUTLOOK
Our 3Q98 EPS estimate remains unchanged at $0.26. Our 3Q same-store sales estimate remains intact at 5%. Our LINCS estimate remains unchanged at 0% as the company continues to anniversary the benefits of strong store openings in smaller markets.

In addition, we believe Home Depot's cost structure is in great shape. Should sales slow, management still has plenty of room to expand margins and deliver on its goal of 23-25% EPS growth in 1999.

LINCS DEFINITION = y-o-y change in sales per square foot of new stores: we do not report a point estimate for the month due to the volatile nature of the measure however, using quarter-end square footage for new stores is a good proxy and we can generate an approximation of the trend-line which remains very positive.
