So Reggie, what, exactly, has Microsoft done to reduce piracy with Windows 98? Windows 95 sure wasn't hard to copy, I keep a copy of OSR2 on disk to ease the inevitable reinstallation pain. Though that's a bandaid, I still ought to get a disk clone program.

There's this forced registration to use the auto-update thing, of course, but that auto-update thing sounds like another "do you feel lucky" offering. The "version conflict resolution manager" in Windows 98 conveniently throws out newer DLL's as part of its "seamless upgrade", to assure "a stable, consistent base", but then, having at some later point established, if not "a stable, consistent base", at least an environment that works for you, you're supposed to hand the whole machine over to Microsoft to do what it wishes? Once again, do you feel lucky?

Aside from which, there's a simple workaround there too. Is there something else? Do you really need to register to install Windows 98? Microsoft certainly has the means to do something about piracy, for anybody with an internet-connected machine anyway, but they've denied snooping so far.

Cheers, Dan.
