OT Yo, Cyber, the NYSE does use percentages...
You said: "I find it incredibly stupid of the NYSE to continue using point levels instead of percentages."
No doubt that what's the quarterly recalculations are abt. For example, when the numbers in my message above were announced early last April, the Dow was at abt 8500, which would mean level 1 halts kick in at abt 10 percent.
"Also the curbs should kick in at plus or minus .0005%. Let the program-trading bastards get real jobs! They should all have
been in jail since Oct. '87 anyway."
Personally I couldn't agree more, but the markets are run by machines now, not people, and that ain't gonna change. And I think it's going to get lots worse as more and more Gen X'ers, who've been crawling around inside computers since age five, start day trading. Indeed, I think it's going to change the face of the market completely in the next five years -- my guess -- and eventually require regulation of its own. More and more, day traders get in and out for a few thousand shares -- paying almost no commission -- in a couple hours and can do well with a couple thirty-seconds in profit. We've seen it happen a few times w/ RNTK in just the recent past.
