Zeev, I got this comment off of the Yahoo thread. They were discussing various types of wafers. What do you think? I wonder what percentage of their production is divided between the two.

You are correct in saying bulk silicon wafers are what MEMC
supplies and that is what is used for SOI. These are prime polished
wafers and not epi wafers (polished wafers with a monocrystal layer
of silicon epitaxially grown on the surface). I believe I'm correct in
saying that MEMC only supplies the polished wafer to folks that use
SOI. It is up to the customer to perform the oxygen anneal process.
These polished wafers provide almost no profit to MEMC. Where
they make their money is the epitaxial wafers. These are high
value-added products with high margins. This is why it was almost a
no-brainer to close the Spartanburg plant....they have no epi
capability and provide little to the bottom line
