APACHE Medical Systems Announces Multiple New Contracts for APACHE III Critical Care Series Products and Services

MCLEAN, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--August 4, 1998--APACHE Medical Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMSI - news), today announced the signing of three new clients for systems and services from the Company's APACHE III Critical Care Series(TM) product line. These new clients include Kaiser Permanente - Baldwin Park, California; Piedmont Hospital - Atlanta, Georgia; and Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center - Hartford, Connecticut.

Kaiser Permanente - Baldwin Park becomes the ninth Kaiser Permanente facility to implement an APACHE critical care decision support system. ''APACHE III has been instrumental in helping us control ICU utilization and improve quality of care at my former medical center,'' commented Bruce E. Corigliano, MD, Director-Critical Care Unit at the Baldwin Park facility, ''and I am looking forward to repeating this success at Baldwin Park.''

Piedmont Hospital is a member of the PROMINA Health System, Georgia's largest not-for-profit healthcare system, with 12 hospitals and over 2,500 physicians serving the Atlanta metropolitan area. ''Successfully applying this type of advanced clinical decision support will contribute directly to our core mission of bringing a higher quality of healthcare to our community, and implementing APACHE here has received strong support from our physician leadership,'' according to Robert Maynard, Piedmont's Chief Operating Officer.

Founded in 1897, and licensed for 617 acute inpatient beds, Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center is the largest Catholic hospital in New England. ''Saint Francis is rising to the challenge of providing quality healthcare at best cost,'' said Thomas W. Hijeck, RN, Director of Patient Care Services and Respiratory Therapy. ''Our investment in APACHE is a clear example of the commitment to provide our physicians and nurses with the information they need to measure and improve patient care and patient outcomes.''

The APACHE III Critical Care Series products provide risk-adjusted hospital and health system performance data and comparison to Best Demonstrated Practices and norms. This information is essential for hospitals to identify priorities for quality and cost improvement and in support of daily patient care management. APACHE's unique approach includes two main modules. Voyager+ provides retrospective analysis, while the Discover+ module offers concurrent and predictive information in support of day-to-day patient care decisions, including at the bedside. The companion APACHE Best Care(TM) CPI (Clinical Process Improvement) Service guides new users through a first start-to-finish clinical process improvement project and helps users develop both the system expertise and process evaluation skills necessary to achieve rapid results and substantial, sustainable long-term impact from APACHE systems.

APACHE Medical Systems, Inc. is the recognized leader in the development of risk-adjustment models, clinical decision support tools and quality improvement programs for the care of high-risk, high-cost patients. The Company's products and services enable health systems, hospitals and providers to apply an evidence-based approach to achieve clinical performance excellence, reduce cost and compete effectively under managed care.

Well-known internationally for the APACHE III methodology for critical care, the Company's programs are today helping providers to better manage the clinical, financial and patient satisfaction outcomes of high-risk, high- cost patients in critical, acute, cardiovascular, HIV/AIDS and sub-acute care. Both APACHE's Critical Care Series and Acute Care Voyager+ products are accepted by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations for reporting under the ''ORYX'' performance measurement initiative.
