Dainippon Screen To Cut Staff By 6% Due To
Group Net Loss
TOKYO (Nikkei)-Dainippon Screen Mfg. Co. (7735) disclosed a
restructuring proposal on Friday calling for cutting 210 staff, or 6% of
its work force, this fiscal year. The semiconductor-manufacturing
equipment maker has revised estimated group sales downward by 32
billion yen to 170 billion yen for the year ending March 1999 on slow
demand for chips worldwide.

Consolidated net loss is expected to reach 16.5 billion yen, compared
with earlier projections of 1 billion yen in net profit. The net loss will
be the first in four years.

Dainippon Screen plans to reduce outlays by a total 16 billion yen this
fiscal year by slashing executive salaries, R&D spending and capital
investment, among other items.

The company expects a parent-only pretax loss of 6.2 billion yen for
the half year ending September due to order cancellations. Sales are
also forecast to plunge 20 billion yen from earlier estimates to 71
billion yen.

Dainippon Screen is set to cancel its dividend payment at the end of the
current fiscal year.

Cumulative loss, which stood above 10 billion yen at the end of March,
is expected to swell further this fiscal term.
