Amat entered into this because your claim was that the high volume, low margin businesses (such as Dell) were likely to benefit from advanced mfg whereas the high end product type companies (such as Csco) were not. The flaw in this strategy is that many high end vendors source globally, very expensive componentry so managing that expense can be significant. Amat is a high end vendor that is trying to optimize their supply chain now with SCM, as is Sun as I understand it.

Dell uses I2 SCM software with a somewhat custom mfg package called Chess (now Glovia).

Re: Asia, a part of the SCM implementation involves bringing your trading partners online. Certainly many asian companies are already online with Rhythm (the I2 SCM product - currently the leader, I know Fujitsu has Rhythm) but not all. If you want to manage the chain you need to have to bring everybody on, it can take years.
