Ford was confirmed by the Senate, and he became President when Nixon resigned. Ford nominated Rockefeller to be Vice-President, and Rockefeller was confirmed by the Senate. Ford chose not to have Rockefeller as his running mate for the 1976 election (although, technically, Rockefeller announced that he decided he did not want to continue in the position beyond the end of the term). Ford named Bob Dole as his running mate, in part as a sop to Reagan delegates at the convention, Ford having narrowly beaten Reagan for the Presidential nomination. Rockefeller died in 1977, the first year of Jimmy Carter's term as President. Harrison Hickman
