Kevin: Since I get the magazine I calculated the cost/POP in a table they provided that showed Net Bids and POP's:
Bidder-----------Net Bids-----------POPs-------------Cost/POP WNP Communications Inc.---$187---105---$1.78 Nextband Communications LLC---$135---96---$1.41 WinStar LMDS LLC---$43---17---$2.53 Baker Creek Communications LLC---$26---91---$0.29 Cortelyou Communications Corp---$25---11---$2.27 BTA Associates---$17---4---$4.25 ALTA Wireless Inc---$15---7---$2.14 Eclipse Communications Corp---$14---12---$1.17 ARNet Inc---$12---9---$1.33 CoServ LLC---$10---8---$1.25
Since it's an auction, the bidders got what they wanted at the best price they could get it at, or decided the area being bid on was too expensive and let it go to a higher bidder. I know that the bidding process took weeks, and everyone had the opportunity to raise the bid for a location. I'm assuming that some of these bidders were only interested only in specific areas that they had "plans" for, and therefore were willing to pay more for it then someone else who bid as a speculative investment. Not knowing the specific winners for each area, or their business plan, it's hard to determine the value to each /POP. My basic philosophy in this industry is that you can't have too much spectrum, or too many POPs. Basically, N has gotten both on the cheap!
Off to a ballgame.
