GENERAL OIL PRESENTATION WELL ATTENDED

By J. Brock (FINN)

Roger Bromley, Drilling Manager for Shell and Callum MacSween, Rig Manager for Borgny Dolphin gave a general presentation about Drilling for Oil in the North Falklands
Basin. well over 60 people attended the session in the History Room at the Falkland Islands Community School.

The very informative lecture began with an introduction to Borgny Dolphin and with vidios and slides Mr. Bromley showed action on the drilling floor and various bits and
pieces on the tower as well as footage of the safety boat, which is ever present in some very rough seas. According to Mr. Bromley the crew on the safety boat spend eight
weeks at sea before being relieved by a fresh crew.

Next there was a discussion and slides about how oil is formed and how it is captured within the rocks. This was followed by more slides about how to find that oil.

There was a lengthy series of slides showing how the rig is moved, using GPS to within a few metres of where the Geologists say it the optimum spot to drill. The basics of
drilling were discussed with a video showing the various stages of piercing the seabed, installing and cementing pipe, installing the well head.

After the video an actual drill bit was described. Two were actually on display. and Mr. Bromley explained that they could be made of three materials: Stainless Steel,
Tungsten Carbide, and Industrial Diamonds. The type of drill bit depended on the state of the seabed being drilled.

The presentation was excellent and Mr. Bromley made it quite understandable for people unfamiliar to the oil industry.

This does leave you wondering, so did no one ask the Question....?
