Scrumbia:

<<RISC CPU's generally do double precision faster than single precision.>>

Can you explain why this is so? Is it because the RISC CPU has a 64bit registers and 64-bit fp core?

<<If you look closely at the image quality of 3D apps on your computer, you will see that real-time 3D rendering for computers is not at a very advanced stage. In fact it is in it's infancy. >>

Don't you think the reason 3D games are still at its infancy because the software writers know that the current desktop doesn't have the FP power to do high resolution and reasonable frame rate? Don't you think that if the FP power increase by 5X due to faster CPU power and larger memory bandwidth I still can achieve higher 3D resolution at acceptable frame rate? I can use smoothing function to compensate to make picture stunning. Even at 64-bit double precision you are not even close to "photographic image".

The problem with the double precision is that it is a 64 bits calculation and the CPU is a 32bits and is not optimized for 64bits.
Thus double-precision FP will never be as fast as the 32-bit single precision calculation.

Anyway, check out this site for the next cool game, Trespasser

This game is the next generation in gaming experience. This game is optimized for 3DNow! Due to its extensive use of FP there are 3DNow "handcode" written lines to make the game fps faster. This game will show you the difference between SIMD "single-precision FPU" versus Intel pipeline FPU.
