Big Pharma Review

- Despite a 1.6% weekly decline, Big Pharma was very strong as compared to the Dow (-5.6%, S&P (-5.0%) and the very NASTie (-8.8%) as investors continue to seek a haven for quality.

- LLY and AHP set 1998 all-time highs.

- Reflecting the expedited review of Celebra, AHP (+5.8%) was the weekly leader and moved ahead of PFE in the YTD race. So much for concern about Redux litigation.

-This week's decliners were all less than the Dow; PNU (-5.5%), ABT (-4.5%), and PFE (-4.2%).

-For the month, Big Pharma is down 1.7% as compared to a 9.4% decline for the Dow and 12.4% decline for the techie NASTie . AHP (+9.3%) has taken over the August lead over Da Cup (+7.8%%) is the monthly leader. PFE remains 7.5% in the hole. In August, 1997, PFE declined 7.0% before increasing 8.7% in September and 17.3% on October.

-YTD, Big Pharma (+26.3%) is very impressive as compared to the Dow (+1.8%), S&P (+5.8%) and the NASTie (+4.4%). Every Big Pharma is showing a gain.

-In the YTD race, there is a new "Big 3" #1 WLA (+80.0%) followed by SGP (+52.9%) and AHP (+47.2%). PFE dropped one spot with a 36.3% YTD increase.

-In an analysis of current Big Pharma prices versus their highs, the following companies show the greatest declines from their 1998 highs; SBH (-19.0%), AMGN (-17.9%), and PFE (-16.5%). The Dow has officially corrected with a 13.8% decline off its high of 9,338 (7/17/98). In comparison, Big Pharma is 6.9% off its alltime high set on June 11,1998.
