Appreciate your view. As my grandfather used to say, "That's what makes horseracing". Stocks that go up are good choices, those that go down are not - over what time frame - hmmm? Of course, trends are important and are the starting point for analysis in picking stocks. For instance, I picked Cisco in 1990 because I saw potential in networking then. I pick the Q now because I see potential in telecom equip suppliers - especially wireless and fiber. But the fact remains that "networking" was a roller coaster ride as wireless is now. Does that mean we avoid taking the risk which permits homeruns and multiple baggers because of the chance of striking out sometimes. No IMO. But my idea of picking carefully goes well beyond choosing a specific stock out of thin air. The stock is chosen in its context in trends and industry realities. But and again I suggest but, I for one have not been able to "time" the market successfully - and IMO neither do most individual investors. Even the professionals seem to have a poor record in that. The achilles heel to me is not selling (at the top) - when is that? But it is when to get back in. At the bottom - when is that? How do we consistently succeed in this set of actions time after time after time in multiple stocks. Sure I have tried over the years, but have concluded that for me I just don't have sufficient smarts to make all those moves. Just my personal opinion and therefore style. Wish you well with your superior timing wisdom. Chaz
