It's possible that you had a partial fill of 100 shares on your short sale, and then the bid ticked down so your order was no longer possible to execute as a short sale.

I too get unsolicited price improvement on NYSE. It's a nice surprise and happens quite often. I know on Nasdaq I will always get the worst price my limit order will allow.
