Ish,
If you think flagellation is kinky, you should come over here around easter time. There are a lot of little sects here that mix the Catholic stuff inherited with the Spanish with a big dose of folk religion, and they get pretty crazy. Flagellation is all over the place, sometimes in large groups. Some of them even have themselves crucified, I guess out of sympathy. I hope alcohol is involved, for their sake.
We do mostly salt water, living 5 minutes walk from the beach. Mostly light tackle over rocky and coral bits. Some good eating fish, though I only know their names in local dialect. The best areas are a few hours paddle away, so we don't usually get to them. Someday I'll overcome my basic prejudices and get a boat with a motor. A kayak is hardly the ideal vehicle for taking an 8 year old fishing, especially with lures. The casts are often a bit wild, and those treble hooks have come a bit closer to my ears than I like. One day long ago, on opening day of trout season in upstate NY, I saw a guy end up wearing a royal coachman as an earring, a fashion I would not care to imitate.
Lots of big game fishing here, which I don't do much. My favorite is the mangrove swamps, moving a small boat around real slow and casting ahead. Some decent fish, and you feel like you're chasing something, not trolling around in circles waiting for a hit.
