Market Features: Dow Down 550,
Second Halt Ends Trading Early

By Justin Lahart

The stock market closed early today.

For the first time ever, the Dow closed down 550 points.
The stock market would've halted trading for an hour, but
with the close less than an hour away, stocks simply
stopped trading.

The trading halt rules, recently changed, call for a half hour
halt at 350 points up or down and a one hour halt at 550
points up or down. The half hour halt ended at 3:05. It took
the market 25 minutes to burn through another 200 points.
The trading halted at 3:30 p.m.

On the floor, traders said the 30 minute halt did little to
soothe frayed nerves. Sentiment is terribly negative and
traders do not know where the bottom really is at this point.
According to hedge-fund managers, brokers are calling
seeking bids, but none are forthcoming at the present time.

TheStreet.com will have continuing, extensive coverage of
this stock market dive.

That was the bottom then. The DOW chart is looking real similar to me today.
