But, in the three companies I've worked in since the dawn of the PC, no PCs were upgraded with anything more that memory or I/O boards. (I saw workstation SPARC 1+ motherboards upgraded, but they never quite got it right - those machines are the first to lockup). I'm sure quite a few of us saw the same corporate behavior.

Given the headache of upgrading successfully, I'm betting the replacement path is very nearly cost effective. Anyway, the cost of administration might be less for new machines with remote management built into the NICs - and that's an incentive.

Of course, I'm one of the losers who bought into this dip, so what do I know.......
