Christianity was located largely around the rim of the Mediterranean, from North Africa around to southern France. The Romans had unified the Mediterranean under their rule, and had built a system of roads so that you could travel quickly throughout the Empire. Greek was the common tongue in the East, Latin in the West. Pastors of the local congregations were literate, as it's a writing based religion. The early church fathers quoted extensively from scripture in their letters, so it's possible to see what they were familiar with. Until the Vandals, Goths, Huns, etc destroyed the Empire it wasn't hard to travel around freely.

The first schism, along East-West, Greek-Latin lines, was about the year 1000.
