Japan July VCR shipments up 5.5% y/y-industry body

TOKYO, Aug 31 (Reuters) - Japanese domestic shipments of video cassette recorders (VCRs) rose 5.5 percent in July from a year earlier to 589,000 units, the Electronics Industries' Association of Japan said on Monday.

Shipments of VCRs rose on a year-on-year basis for the third month in a row, an association spokesman said.

Domestic shipments of colour televisions in July fell 2.6 percent from a year earlier to 753,000 units.

Shipments of mini disc players rose a steep 52.6 percent in July from the same month a year earlier to 234,000 units, helped by launches of several new compact models and lower priced models. Shipment of mini disc players has been gaining on a year-on-year basis since March 1995, the spokesman said.

July shipments of car navigation systems rose 9.9 percent from a year earlier to 118,000 units.
