CheckFree to Develop and Operate National Database

ATLANTA, Aug. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- At its national conference in Denver
today, the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators (NAUPA)
introduced a prototype of its soon-to-be-launched SCOUT Web site. SCOUT, the
State Clearinghouse of Unclaimed Treasures, is an affiliate of NAUPA, and has
been working with Atlanta-based CheckFree Corporation (Nasdaq: CKFR) to
develop a central database for states to list unclaimed properties records.
The database will be accessible by several means, including telephone/VRU,
fax, mail, e-mail and through the World Wide Web site, www.freemoneyusa.com,
which will be available in early 1999.
In April 1998, NAUPA announced its plans to develop and operate the
National Unclaimed Property Database, a database that will provide a new, easy
way for the public to gain access to information on unclaimed property
nationwide. That same month, as the result of NAUPA state representatives'
efforts to develop a "one-stop shop" for consumers to locate unclaimed
property, SCOUT was formed. Now, states can pool their resources into a
single database and cooperatively market the SCOUT database and Web site
throughout the United States.
Also in April, NAUPA selected CheckFree to develop and operate the
national database and Web site. Participating states will be able to provide
records directly to CheckFree's central database.
SCOUT board members include NAUPA state administrators from Colorado,
Florida, Louisiana, Massachusetts, North Carolina and Wisconsin. In
introducing the Web site prototype at its national convention, NAUPA hopes to
draw other states' interest in participating.
"We're very pleased with what we've been able to accomplish in just a few
months," said SCOUT Chairman Peter DeVries. "Now, we want to invite other
NAUPA administrators to share in our accomplishment by listing their state's
unclaimed property information on the nationaldatabase and 'freemoneyusa'
Web site."
The SCOUT project will offer consumers the ability to search all states
simultaneously, instead of state by state. This increases the probability of
locating any unclaimed property that they may have a right to claim.
"There's a tremendous amount of valuable property that goes unclaimed each
year," added CheckFree Software Senior Vice President Frank J. Amoruso. "We
hope to provide consumers with an easy way to locate this property by
providing them a single place to visit and search for what may legally be
theirs."

About SCOUT
SCOUT is an affiliate of The National Association of Unclaimed Property
Administrators. (NAUPA). It will eventually include in its membership all
states that participate in this joint venture to share data on a common Web
site. It has a Board of Directors who are guiding its initial steps to
becoming an active entity. The Board members were appointed by the NAUPA
President and include administrators from Colorado, Florida, Louisiana,
Massachusetts, North Carolina and Wisconsin.

About NAUPA, Inc.
NAUPA is a non-profit organization composed of unclaimed property
administrators from the 50 states and the District of Columbia. NAUPA was
established to enhance and improve the performance of the administration of
Unclaimed Property programs. NAUPA is dedicated to increasing public awareness
of the role the states play in protecting the property of missing owners,
locating the rightful owners and returning their assets. NAUPA provides a
