Rex Finds Diamonds in Mauritania
Business Wire - August 31, 1998 09:56
TORONTO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 31, 1998--Rex announced today that, two diamonds were found in two samples taken to the south of Touajil in the company's El Hammami exploration lease in Northern Mauritania. The two samples consisted of surface sand and gravel, sieved on site between 0.315 and 0.500 mm, yielding respectively 0.55 and 0.51 kg. After heavy mineral separation, the 0.55 kg sample yielded 7.37 grams of concentrate and the 0.51 kg sample yielded 9.72 grams of concentrate. The nature of the diamonds was confirmed by X-ray analysis at Stellenbosch University, South Africa.

The samples were part of a systematic 1 by 1 km grid, covering a graben structure (depression between tectonic faults) where so far the highest concentrations of kimberlitic G10 garnets have been found, as well as chrome-diopside with diamond-inclusion composition. The area was found after a thorough analysis of the dispersal of the kimberlitic garnets by wind (present-day) and water (older rivers, now dried out). The area is about 20 km to the north of the area where the company a few weeks ago concentrated its trenching and pitting efforts. Whilst this trenching did not reveal kimberlites, it did indicate a large alluvial gravel body, rich in kimberlitic garnets. Sampling east and north of the gravel body led to the discovery of diamond, chrome-diopside and abundant G10 garnets in a graben structure on the rim of the Taoudeni Basin. Within this graben, the aeromagnetic data are noisy and no magnetic anomalies can be recognized. Follow-up to locate the kimberlite sources will therefore be done by detailed soil sampling in the coming weeks.
