I bought 5k shares of DISH today, so I guess I am figuring the same. The internet is 5 years aways from really grabbing the attention of the average family. The internet needs to be upgraded in its handling of massive traffic. The fact that it is slow to appeal to the masses is good news as far as I am concerned.

MPEG2 is going to be mostly a business application and a cable thing.

Bell Atlantic seems to be taking the view now that they will be ahead in the long run to invest in the fiber infrastructure now rather than later. They are also doing their ADSL trials in limited telephone exchange areas. They are very secretive about their intentions or they just are lost; one or the other.

Given all of this; digital cable systems are still slowly going to roll out and will probably make cable an ok long-term investment since they are out of favor right now.

Will ADSL be part of a videophone craze? This in addition to high speed internet.

It is hard to see where this is all going. Ultra high speed cable modems are available thru Jones Intercable in many Northern Virginia areas and yet there have been very few takers; low demand. Most people aren't that interested in the internet. Until there is content that is so compelling to have people say; I have to have that; and it will have to be much more than what 56k will deliver will ADSL, satellite Direct PC, or cable modems take off.

Will it be sex like the VCR that is the motivation; interactive real-time video sex through the internet? I am serious. It may be some dumb thing like that that starts the market demand in the non-tech types. After all; the internet is mostly a guy thing and technology toys is mostly a guy thing; check the demographics.
