Storyville unites five of the most talented
musicians ever to grace Austin's legendary stages
playing a unique blend of Texas guitar rock, soul,
and gospel. Led by Malford Milligan - whom the
Austin Chronicle has deemed "the most amazing
male singer in Austin: bar none." Storyville also
includes drummer Chris Layton and bassist
Tommy Shannon (both of Stevie Ray Vaughan's
Double Trouble and the Arc Angels), and
guitarists David Grissom (Joe Ely, John
Mellencamp) and David Holt (Mavericks, Joe Ely,
Carlene Carter).
Storyville recorded their debut album, "Bluest
Eyes", on November Records, while the band was
still very much in its formative stages. "Bluest
Eyes" was a benchmark debut for Storyville with
the The New York Post calling it "a pleasure from
start to end...a no risk disc that will find fans with
followers of the blues, R&B, and rock."
Austin's the type of town where musicians often
find themselves onstage together before they've
even met. And one night in early 1994, that's
basically what happened to Storyville. "The first
time that all of us played together was at Antone's
on a Monday night, when we all just ended up on
stage," says David Grissom. "I think we could all
feel the potential there - that it was a chance to
do something really special. And in the last few
months, we've gotten to the point where we're all
really locked into this deeper thing."
That "deeper thing" finds its perfect articulation in
Storyville's 1996 Atlantic debut, "A Piece Of Your
Soul." From the driving riff-rock of "Bitter Rain"
to the bluesy lilt of "Good Day For The Blues" to
the soulful "Don't Make Me Cry," Storyville unites
its many stylistic elements into a single, solid,
stirring sound.
Despite their nearly limitless pedigree, Storyville
(named after New Orleans' notorious red-light
district) is very much a band. David Grissom
recalls, "For my whole life, the music I've dug the
most has been made by bands - there's something
that happens when you get a group of people
together and they have a vibe, and they develop
a chemistry between them. There's just nothing
else like it."
