Bill - Re: " I see the Intel/AMD wars as a classic example of a top competitor slowly and surely losing share and earnings to other more nimble competitors. "

Intel has maintained good earnings - in case you don't know how to read a financial report - AMD has NO EARNINGS - ONLY LOSSES - for the past 4 quarters - until October, which will make it FIVE QUARTERS.

As for Market share, Intel has recently had a market share FAR iN EXCESS of its historical market share - 85% to 90% vs. 70%. What you are seeing is AMD battling to regain LOST MARKET share at the expense of profits. AMD is LOSING MONEY to REGAIN WHAT THEY HAVE LOST. AMD is essentially selling $100 bills for $85 each !

If you study the numbers closely, you will find that Intel has indeed lost a little market share - but CYRIX/NSM has lost the MOST - and that is where AMD's market share gains have come from.

Intel is making money - excellent money - while very slowly giving up market share.
