Thanks Rudy. Here's one I just went to last week:
Rubicon- think it was on Sacramento in SF. I had the prix fixe meal at $38, which is expensive in my book, but there are a lot of pricier places around. They're famous for their wines. They were a Grand Prize winner in the Wine Spectator. I think they have a half million bucks worth of wine in their cellar. The place is owned by Robin Williams, Robert DeNiro, Francis Ford Coppola, and a restauranteur. Food: *** the dinner I had consisted of Course I: tuna tartare, which was basically chopped up sashimi with cilantro, onions, and soy sauce. Course II: Pork chop over a bed of potato, corn, and bacon hash. Dessert: Dense chocolate mousse cake. The wine our host ordered was a Duckhorn Merlot. It was $67(ouch!) and excellent.
The bread (one of the most important elements for me) served was an Acme sourdough roll made especially for Rubicon. The ambience isn't too great. We had a view of the alley, where someone was picking up garbage, and of the kitchen, where the chefs and/or cooks kept wiping the plates off with what appeared to be the same washcloth.
Service was ok, although I had to ask for more rolls and more coffee.
Overall, I'd recommend the place if you made a lot of money in the market, have held on to it during the "correction" we're having, and don't mind spending a lot of it. However, I prefer places like Lalime's in Berkeley, where the cuisine is as good and the prices a lot cheaper. |
